NGC 1706, also known as PGC 16220 and ESO 85-7, is a spiral galaxy located approximately 230 million light-years away in the southern constellation of Dorado. It was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel during Christmas Day of 1837.

NGC 1706 is part of the LDC357 galaxy group and a smaller trio group called ESO 85-38. Right beside NGC 1706 (On the top left of the image), lies another smaller galaxy designated as PGC 177963.
