[MEX] M5 - URLs in references input is too small until you click in
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Screenshot 2026-06-11 at 08.56.38.png (496×1,144 px, 309 KB)

Seen at a user test. The URL field in references has only a few pixels height.

Steps to reproduce:

Hint: The device toolbar must be activated with a mobile device (if you are testing from Google Chrome desktop).

Or:

  • Open any item page (e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15397819)
  • Click on "Add statement" ("String" data type like "Author name string").
  • Add a reference with a property datatype of string like "TeX string".
  • Refresh the page.
  • Click "Edit" on the created statement.
  • Expand the references and observe.
Root cause:
  • File extensions/Wikibase/repo/resources/wikibase.wbui2025/components/editableStringSnakValue.vue lines 114 - 118
  • File extensions/Wikibase/repo/resources/wikibase.wbui2025/components/editableMonolingualTextSnakValue.vue lines 175 - 179
if ( this.textvalue ) {
	// when editing an existing value, fix the height to show the full text
	const textarea = this.$refs.inputElement.$refs.textarea;
	textarea.style.height = `${ textarea.scrollHeight }px`;
}

AC

  • URL input field in references and qualifiers has it's normal size

Event Timeline

I don't seem to be able to reproduce this directly on either beta or production. Do you have more details - user agent, website, item? Or steps to reproduce?

The issue has been investigated, and both the reproduction steps and root cause have been included in the task description.

Change #1304073 had a related patch set uploaded (by Sadiya.mohammed13; author: Sadiya.mohammed13):

[mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase@master] Avoid shrinking hidden string inputs

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/1304073

@Sadiya.Mohammed_WMDE I've reviewed the provided solution, it works .. but I discovered that the same logic happens also in extensions/Wikibase/repo/resources/wikibase.wbui2025/components/editableMonolingualTextSnakValue.vue so, I'll update the task description.

Change #1304073 merged by jenkins-bot:

Hi @mahmoud.abdelsattar.wmde, i think i am missing a key of the puzzle!

the link https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15397819 opens normal wikidata for me instead of beta, even if i selected mobile view and am in developer tools. Since this is a MEX task, i am really confused :D

Help?

In theory, the issue should still be reproducible on Wikidata (because the fix was merged after the branch cut for this week), with the fix on Beta Wikidata; however, I can’t reproduce the issue on Wikidata at the moment (the reference snak already has the right height as soon as I expand it). Can anyone else?

@Alice.moutinho and @Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE You need to view the page on the browser's mobile view in Chrome:

Hint: The device toolbar must be activated with a mobile device (if you are testing from Google Chrome desktop).

The issue is still reproducible.

I still can’t reproduce it in Firefox’ Responsive Design Mode. Is this a Chrome-only issue?

Yes, confirmed!
On Firefox and Safari it works as expected, only on Google Chrome it doesn't.

This is only reproducible in Chrome/Chromium, while in the mobile device emulation. In production, it's still reproduceable. An example is: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4115189, when editing "position held":

Locally, with the latest code, I cannot reproduce it.

This is looking good to me :)
