Frequently Asked Questions

You should meet the following qualifications to volunteer:

  • Minimum age of 13. Each volunteer role has a minimum age – check the ones you are interested in!
  • Valid email address.
  • Completed volunteer application.
  • Volunteers ages 18 or older will be asked to complete a disclosure form and clear a Washington State Patrol background check. This does not apply to Teen Volunteer League or Teen Councils.
  • All volunteers must review our volunteer expectations as part of the application process.

If there’s an open volunteer role and location you’re interested in, start by filling out a volunteer application! The application should take about 15 minutes to complete. Within 1-2 weeks after submitting your application, you should hear back from us.

Yes, the library accepts volunteers who are fulfilling court-ordered or school community service requirements, as long as they meet all volunteer qualifications.

Before you apply, please be aware that volunteer placement and onboarding typically take at least 2-3 weeks. If you have a pressing service deadline or a large number of hours to complete, the library may not be able to provide enough volunteer time to meet your needs.

Visit your local library, where staff can assist you with registering for an email address at one of our public computers. Once you have an email address, you can use it to apply to volunteer.

While some of our volunteer roles are open to both teens and adults, there are also volunteer options available specifically for teens. Please check out  teen-only volunteer opportunities.
