Entra Connect 2.4.92.0 - MSAL WAM warning every synchronization cycle

After upgrading Microsoft Entra Connect to version 2.4.92.0, I began seeing the following warning in Event Viewer every time the synchronization service runs:

Event ID: 905 Event Type: Warning Event Source: Directory Synchronization Event Log: Application MSAL: The current InteractionMode is Service and the Windows Broker (WAM) requires a foreground window; using the embedded webview.

The event is logged approximately every 30 minutes, corresponding with our normal Entra Connect synchronization cycle and is not preventing synchronization from occuring.

Entra Connect synchronization itself appears to be working normally. I have not observed failed synchronization cycles or problems synchronizing objects to Microsoft Entra ID.

Environment / observations:

  • Synchronization is completing successfully
  • There is no outbound HTTP/HTTPS proxy
  • Our environment is federated with AD FS.

I am trying to determine whether this is an expected/benign warning introduced by the newer Entra Connect version or an indication of a misconfiguration.

Thank you.

Hey Terry,

i also upgraded to Entra Connect 2.6.92.0 as well of my Customers.
my Setup is: Entra Connect 2.6.92.0, application-based authentication and no AD FS

in all of the Entra Connect Setups the Event 905 appears with the same text 3 times per sync cycle but like you already mentioned the Sync itself is working without a Problem. This Warning started to appear after the Upgrade to 2.6.92.0 before that the Service had logged normally without a single Event 905 (tested only in my LAB).

What the message means:

Entra Connect uses MSAL to get the token from Entra ID. MSAL prefers WAM but WAM only works in an interactive session with a window what Entra Connect does not have. MSAL falls back to the embedded webview and logs this warning. Microsoft itself documents both the WAM limitation and the automatic fallback under this learn page: here according to the release notes of 2.6.84.0 they updated the bundled MSAL and added WAM sign-in to the wizard which fits the timing for the Events.

so to answer your question:

no fix is needed, and there´s no supported setting to turn it off to pop up it's just noise from the Connect Service itself this points to the new version, not to a misconfiguration on your side in the Entra Connect Service.

i am assuming you did a Typo in the Version number or did you really mean 2.4.92.0
