Looking at the code, it appears that up to five mouse buttons are supported: https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/blob/main/include/SDL3/SDL_mouse.h#L144
Buttons higher than the fifth, however, appear to be ignored. This means programs aren't able to use these (e.g. luanti-org/luanti#16750).
From my testing, KDE Plasma supports up to 48 distinct mouse buttons, and there are certainly devices that allow access to a considerable amount thereof (e.g. Logitech G600 has up to 20 of these). So an increase in the number of valid detectable mouse inputs would be of use for programs with rebindable controls.
