Duplicate desktop entries created for MKVToolNix AppImage #172

Description

@xmha97

Description

When installing the MKVToolNix AppImage using AppManager v3.7.3, two desktop entries are created for the same application.

The AppImage was downloaded from:

https://mkvtoolnix.download/appimage/MKVToolNix_GUI-101.0-x86_64.AppImage

After installation, the following two desktop entries are created:

~/.local/share/applications/mkvtoolnix-gui.desktop
~/.local/share/applications/org.bunkus.mkvtoolnix-gui.desktop

Both entries appear in the application launcher, resulting in two shortcuts for the same application.

Relevant details

The first desktop entry contains:

Exec="/home/ubuntu/Applications/MKVToolNix GUI" %F

while the second contains:

Exec="/home/ubuntu/.local/bin/mkvtoolnix-gui" %F

The executable in ~/.local/bin is a symlink to the same AppImage:

~/.local/bin/mkvtoolnix-gui -> '/home/ubuntu/Applications/MKVToolNix GUI'

Both .desktop files otherwise contain essentially the same application metadata, including the same application name, icon, MIME types, categories, and uninstall action.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install AppManager v3.7.3.
  2. Download the MKVToolNix AppImage:
    MKVToolNix_GUI-101.0-x86_64.AppImage
  3. Install the AppImage using AppManager.
  4. Do not launch MKVToolNix.
  5. Open the application launcher.

Expected behavior

Only one desktop entry should be created for the installed AppImage, resulting in a single MKVToolNix entry in the application launcher.

Actual behavior

Two desktop entries are created:

mkvtoolnix-gui.desktop
org.bunkus.mkvtoolnix-gui.desktop

As a result, MKVToolNix appears twice in the application launcher.

Additional information

The issue occurs immediately after installation. MKVToolNix was never launched, so the duplicate desktop entry does not appear to be caused by the application itself creating a desktop entry at runtime.

AppManager version:

3.7.3

The two entries also point to the same underlying AppImage, either directly or through the symlink in ~/.local/bin.

It would be useful to check whether AppManager is registering the AppImage twice under different desktop-entry IDs, and whether one of these desktop entries can be avoided or deduplicated during installation.
