
Maria Macuch
Maria Macuch is Professor (em.) of Iranian Studies in Berlin. She was head of the Institute of Iranian Studies (Iranistik) at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, prior to her retirement in 2015. Her scholarly research focuses mainly on pre-Islamic (Zoroastrian/Sasanian) Iranian law and its impact on other ancient legal systems of the Near East in late antiquity. Her main areas of research include: (1) Pahlavi legal sources and literature; (2) Reconstruction of Sasanian law and its relation to Zoroastrian theology and jurisprudence (3) Middle Persian legal terminology; (4) Impact of Iranian jurisprudence on other legal systems of late antiquity (Rabbinic, Islamic, Christian law); (5) Pre-Islamic literary traditions; (6) Classical Persian literature. She was President of the Societas Iranologica Europaea, is member of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iranicarum, Honorary Fellow of the Ancient India and Iran Trust, Cambridge (UK) and editor of the series Iranica since 1993.
