The on-screen realignment of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' starry energy wasn't the only nostalgic reunion conjuring magic on the set of Freakier Friday, and Entertainment Weekly has new, exclusive details on an epic sequel cameo that led to Lohan's reunion with Parent Trap costar Elaine Hendrix after 27 years. After working together in Disney's 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, which cast Lohan in dual roles as twins navigating their father's (Dennis Quaid) engagement to a prickly publicist (Hendrix), the actress tells EW that she didn't maintain much contact with 11-year-old Lohan because of their age difference. "Loosely, between, we reunited during the pandemic to do a Parent Trap reunion with Katie Couric, so I saw her then. But, that was online," Hendrix recalls, noting that a text from her longtime friend, collaborator, and Freakier Friday director Nisha Ganatra unexpectedly brought her and Lohan back together. "I was like, girl, you know I'll show up for you to do anything," Hendrix remembers saying. EW's exclusive sneak peek at Elaine Hendrix in 'Freakier Friday'. Glen Wilson/Disney "I got to physically see her, and we spent a lot of time together on set, hanging out, reminiscing, and catching up. Now, we’re better about staying in touch with one another," Hendrix reveals of shooting her cameo as Blake Kale, who works for the magazine that is featuring a pop star mentored by Lohan's Anna Coleman, who now works at a record label. Seeing Lohan again marked an emotional turning point in their relationship, Hendrix observes. "She lives on the other side of the world and has a family and is busy. We both have full lives, but particularly through social media and texting, we’re staying in touch, which is quite lovely. I’m so happy for her and where she is in her life. It’s nice, in these new chapters of our lives, to be in contact," she explains. Jodie Foster turned down 'Freakier Friday' cameo: 'She's not going to do it' (exclusive) How 'Freakier Friday' corrects 2003 film's 'hurtful' Asian stereotypes "I just love it.," she adds. "There’s a lot of people who live a lot of lives. Life lifes, you know what I mean? There are few people who live their life in such a public way that she was thrusted into. We go to see things we just don’t normally see about people. To see her now after so much that she’s gone through. She’s just in a really great place. She looks great, she’s so happy, and I’m happy and thrilled for her." In addition to Hendrix, Ganatra previously revealed in an interview for EW's recent Freakier Friday cover story that the team attempted to get original 1976 Freaky Friday star Jodie Foster on board for a cameo, but she declined. Regardless, the film still reunites Lohan with Curtis, who played her mother, Tess Coleman, in the 2003 iteration of Freaky Friday. Now, in the highly anticipated sequel, the ladies play the characters at different stages in their lives, bound together once again by another supernatural instance of body-swapping magic that switches their souls with Anna's daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons). It's not very often that you get to work with someone who's been such a big part of your life on a personal level," Lohan recalls of Curtis' mission to get the film made, which involved the Oscar winner calling Disney boss Bob Iger. "That was exciting for me, to come back and do a big-screen film with a woman that I admire, that's part of my life off-screen. To have that chance again, it doesn't happen much. I felt lucky to be able to do it."
