Etymology 1

Bulgarian or Serbo-Croatian loanword, compare Bulgarian dialectal дяк (djak, “pupil, deacon”), Serbo-Croatian đak (“pupil”), archaic dijak (“scribe”), from Medieval Greek διάκος (diákos, “deacon”). Doublet of deák.
