Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Central Pacific *poro (“genus Solanum”). Initially proposed to go further back to Proto-Oceanic *mpodo, however, recent research by the The Lexicon of Proto Oceanic suggests these Solanum species were introduced post-European contact. Compare with Proto-Polynesian *polo.[1]

Noun

[edit]

boro

  1. nightshade (any plant of the genus Solanum) or similar edible shrubs
Na boro e dau vakasavasavataki ka qai vavi me kena na kakana dina.
Solanum plants are usually cleaned and then cooked with staple foods.
  2. (Lau, by extension) greens (any green vegetable)
Nanuma mo kania na boro me baleti na bula vinaka.
Always remember to eat your greens for good health.

Usage notes

[edit]

Traditionally an important part of the Fijian diet, this plant is now largely been replaced in favour bele and tubua and to a lesser degree by European vegetables (English cabbage) and Asian greens (Chinese cabbage, mustard greens). Traditionally prepared by steaming, but now more commonly by boiling.
