    Derived from Proto-Philippine *tau-tau (“pupil (eye)”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tau tau, from Proto-Austronesian *Cau Cau, reduplication of *Cau. Compare Ilocano tao-tao, Kapampangan telataung-mata / balintatau, Central Bikol alintataw / tatawo, Cebuano tawo-tawo, and Tausug tau-tau mata.
