Savon(“Savonian”, genitive) + ranta(“coast”). Originally, the chapelry was founded on the western shores of a lake, the opposite shores of which are no longer Savonia, but Karelia.[1]
The external locative cases (adessive, allative and ablative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Savonranta" is Savonrannalla.
