Usage notes

[edit]

The letter ŭ does not occur in syllable onsets in ordinary vocabulary, and it is debatable how to analyze it phonologically when it appears as an onset in onomatopoeia and the name of the letter itself. Besides the letter name ŭo, created to match the pattern of the other letters despite its violation of Esperanto phonology, Zamenhof only uses it in onset position in ŭa!, the sound made by a crying child, and in the hapax kŭaks (alternatively kvak), the croak of a toad.[1]
