Administrators' newsletter – October 2026
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

- Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
- Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
- The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.
- Interface administrators no longer need to specify the
ResourceLoaderoption in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded throughResourceLoader. (T298199) - The
list=abusefiltersAPI module now supportsformatversion=2and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, theactionsproperty is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)
- The arbitration case Gun control 2 has been closed.
- Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.
- The October 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from September 29 to October 19. The call for candidates ends October 5.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2026 Arbitration Committee elections is opened and closes on 8 October.
- The Good Article Nominations backlog drive has begun and is scheduled to end on November 3.
Hi, JB. This draft should be deleted as a blatant hoax which combines the two films and virtually all participating editors are either blocked or rangeblocked. I've nominated drafts for deletion before but forgot how. –Skywatcher68 (talk) 01:25, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Skywatcher68: A totally pointless draft, but it doesn't obviously meet any of the speedy deletion criteria. It isn't a hoax, because much, and as far as I know all, of what it says is true. I suppose a case could be made for speedy deletion as a test page, so I'll think about that. If I haven't done it within 12 hours then assume I'm not going to. If I don't, and you wish to try for deletion, nominating a draft for a deletion discussion is easy using Twinkle: just click on "xfd" & do what it says.
- Although it isn't directly relevant to the question of deletion, here are some observations on what I've found about the person responsible for the draft. I say "person", singular, because it's clear that all the editing has been from one person, both on the basis of geographical location and on the basis of editing overlap with other temporary accounts on some of the same IP ranges. They have done a fairly large amount of editing, on a number of pages. I've only had a quick look at a small fraction of their edits, so I don't know the full picture, but from what I saw there's a lot of at best not very useful editing, a significant part of it positively disruptive, and at least some of it outright vandalism. The latest temp account is blocked, as is the latest IP range (though for a much shorter time than I would have blocked). Other accounts & ranges haven't edited very recently, so normally I would say blocking would not be justified, but in view of the amount of IP hopping and the likelihood of returning to old ranges, it may be worth considering imposing some partial blocks. (There's already at least one partial range block affecting this editor for which the blocking administrator said he was covering a wider range than he would normally block because of the amount of IP hopping.) I may possibly come back & reconsider whether to do that later, when I'm on a computer rather than a phone. JBW (talk) 13:36, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- It's easy to miss but there's this line:
- The narrator recites the first ten words of The Night Before Christmas before saying, "Oh, wait. Different story, but we'll still see a mouse!" The narrator then announces new tales of giving and loving, and a book opens to show pop-up elves.
- That's why I called it a hoax. –Skywatcher68 (talk) 14:07, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Skywatcher68: OK. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't read and carefully check all of the content (I have far better things to do with my time) so I knew it was perfectly possible that there would be problems that I hadn't seen. That's why I said "as far as I know" all of it is true. It is in fact totally consistent with what I saw in their other editing history: a lot of not particularly constructive but not monstrously bad editing, with small pieces of outright vandalism hidden amongst it. I still don't think that's enough for "hoax" to be the right word, but it certainly adds to the case for deletion & blocking. I'm out of time now, but I'll try to get back to this in a few hours. - There's also Draft:Nico Bravo (film), which might actually happen but the sources are crap. DreamWorks has something scheduled but no title announced as yet. –Skywatcher68 (talk) 15:50, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Skywatcher68: When I eventually got onto a computer, I found that I had already got this draft's history open in a browser tag, which must mean that I had already noticed it yesterday, but hadn't got far with investigating it, and I didn't remember it. Anyway, I have now deleted the draft as a mixture of G2 & G3, and I've placed several partial range blocks, in the hope of discouraging the person concerned from continuing. They cover all of the IP addresses used on this draft, but I may have missed some used by the same person on other pages; obviously I hope not. JBW (talk) 17:04, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry, I forgot to answer your point about Draft:Nico Bravo (film). I had already seen that. It isn't suitable as an article, for obvious reasons, but at first I thought as a draft there are no grounds for deletion. Checking again, though, I realised that one of he references is more than just crap in the same way as the others; it's actually vandalism. Normally I would just remove that reference and leave the rest of the draft alone, but in view of the vandal's history I think the whole draft was probably created as a vehicle for that piece of vandalism, so I shall delete that one too.
