  • @Chipmunkdavis: Not a review, but for an event as significant as this, and for a country with a rich history like PNG (and a good article at that), surely there are several other hooks that can be proposed here? Frankly, I'm not a fan of a hook simply saying that the country gained independence 50 years ago when there are many, many other possibilities. Plus, the request is for it to run on September 16, which is far beyond the DYKSO limit, so a WT:DYK discussion granting an exemption is needed here. There is already consensus for a themed set, and September 16 is only 3 days out from two months of promotion and the nomination was within two months. Lots of potential hooks of course, it just seemed a really nifty way to introduce the set. CMD (talk) 13:52, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Fair enough, but I really don't think this is the best hook for the article. Given how PNG is already a good article, it is realistically not going to have another shot at DYK. Do you have any other options? I am rejecting the hook on interest grounds. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 14:05, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Anyone is welcome to suggest other options. This is going to be the most flexible article of any PNG set by default, so it will likely be the easiest to adjust for set balance. CMD (talk) 14:25, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
I think I can help out.
Alternatively,
  • ALT1b: that Papua New Guinea, despite having only 11.7 million people, speaks over 800 languages?
JuniperChill (talk) 10:53, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
I like both hooks! Chipmunkdavis Are they okay with you? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:45, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
Language is a good angle. CMD (talk) 14:20, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
QPQ: Done.

Overall: All good with the article. As the reviewer, I have unstruck ALT0 as it is "likely to be perceived as unusual or intriguing by readers with no special knowledge or interest in the topic". ALT1b also approved, as it is superior to ALT1. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 16:35, 11 August 2025 (UTC) ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 16:35, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

I won't be striking the original hook again, but for what it's worth, my opposition to ALT0 remains. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 11:06, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
  • I see that it's been a while since this discussion ended, but allow me to propose another hook. I think readers seeing these Papua New Guinea hooks will like to know that it's the independence anniversary, and I think we can incorporate this fact into an interesting hook:
ALT2: ... that before Papua New Guinea gained independence on 16 September 1975, a region had already declared independence from it? Source: [...] local leaders became intent on preempting PNG rule before it gained full independence on September 16, 1975. On September 1, 1975, Bougainville made its first unilateral declaration of independence.
I would like someone to review this hook if we don't think it's too late to change it. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 02:51, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
