Sandringham High School is a public secondary school in Sandringham, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. The school was established in 1967 and provides education from Grade 8 to Grade 12.[1]
History
[edit]Sandringham High School was established in 1967 to serve the Sandringham community in Johannesburg. The school has developed into a secondary school offering academic, sporting, arts and cultural programmes.[2]
The school was originally associated with Johannesburg's Jewish community and subsequently experienced changes in its student population following the end of apartheid.
Trevor Noah attended Sandringham High School and later described his experiences at the school in his memoir Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood.[3]
Academics
[edit]Sandringham High School provides education from Grade 8 through Grade 12 and follows the South African national school curriculum.[4]
The school reported that its Grade 12 Class of 2024 achieved a 94% matric pass rate. The school attributed the improvement to additional academic support, including baseline assessments, extra lessons and holiday programmes.[5]
The school also ran a Grade 12 Winter School programme in 2025, providing additional instruction in subjects including mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical sciences, life sciences, business studies, accounting, geography, English and history.[6]
Infrastructure and development
[edit]During 2025 and 2026, Sandringham High School undertook several infrastructure improvement projects involving the school, its alumni and external partners. The school's published reports describe improvements involving classrooms, ablution facilities, water infrastructure and other facilities.[7]
In 2025, JoJo South Africa donated a backup water supply to the school. The school also reported improvements to its ablution facilities.[8]
During 2026, further improvements were undertaken under the leadership of principal Pascal Rekhoto. According to sources, six existing classrooms were refurbished, including one existing classroom refurbished for use as a science classroom. Existing male and female toilet facilities were also refurbished, while JoJo water storage tanks were installed and became operational.
The precise number of classrooms refurbished, the description of the science classroom and the operational details of the JoJo tanks should be supported by a published school report or independent source before being presented as independently verified facts.
The school has also described a wider programme of improvements intended to restore and upgrade elements of its campus and learning environment.[9]
Extracurricular activities
[edit]Sandringham High School provides sporting, arts and cultural activities alongside its academic programme. (These progammes most notably include Chess, Soccer, Netball, Rugby, Drama, Choir, OLICO and Winter School)[10]
The school's alumni and community partners have supported improvements to sporting and recreational facilities. The school's former gymnasium, known as The Den, has been the subject of a restoration project supported by alumni and partners.[11]
Alumni
[edit]The Sandringham High School Alumni Association was established in 2024. According to the school's alumni website, the association was established to reconnect former pupils and support the school through fundraising, mentorship and community projects.[12]
The alumni website lists members involved in the association's leadership and management, including Merrilyn Marshall, Robyn Cohen, Caryn Conidaris, Dianne Gibson, Raymond Frittelli, Andrew Barrett and Jonathan Cohen.[13]
Trevor Noah is a former pupil of Sandringham High School. He describes his experiences at the school in his memoir Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood.[14]
