About the Event
editWikicurious: Black Broward on Wikipedia is a community editing event on Saturday, June 13 from 12pm - 4pm at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) focused on Wikipedia’s coverage of Broward County, Florida. Participants will work collaboratively to create and improve articles related to local history, cultural landmarks, notable individuals, and community institutions across Fort Lauderdale, Historic Liberia, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, and surrounding areas.

This beginner-friendly event welcomes newcomers and experienced Wikimedians. Participants will receive training on how to edit Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
Hosted by Wikimedia NYC, WikiLatinos, AfroCrowd, Wikimedians of the Caribbean, and held at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) of the Broward County Library system, the event will draw from local archives, oral histories, and special collections.
Wikicurious is a beginner-level series that trains participants how to edit and participate on Wikimedia platforms. Wikicurious started in 2024 with events throughout NYC and has since expanded nationally. Wikicurious is supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

Attendees will need a Wikipedia account and a laptop. Create your account before the event (in the top right corner of this page). NOTE: Wikipedia usernames are public. It is recommended to use a pseudonym or nickname for your username, rather than your real name.

- The event will take place on the in Gallery B. Gallery B is on the first floor on the right, through the smaller door inside of the Main Gallery.
Equipment: Bring your own laptop to edit.
Refreshments: Light bites and drinks will be provided.

About our Speakers
editErin Purdy is the Senior Archivist for the Broward County Library Special Collections department. In this role she works in the three archival repositories across the library system, including the AARLCC Special Collections, located on the second floor of this branch. AARLCC’s archive includes over 100 collections of art, manuscripts, and photographs, and more than 18,000 rare books documenting the history and culture of the African diaspora. She and her team preserve and organize the materials in the collection and open them up for the public to do research in.
Derek T. Davis: Derek T. Davis is a writer, history buff, lecturer, and community activist who is a promoter and advocate of African American culture and history in South Florida. Before his retirement, he managed several top-notch African American facilities in South Florida. Including the Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida, exhibits and programs at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, and the Old Dillard Museum. He continues to be a consultant and organizer of local community projects.
Emmanuel George: Emmanuel s a Dominican-American archivist, filmmaker, and arts organizer based in Hollywood, Florida. In 2016, he produced his first documentary under the Black Broward Film Project, exploring the shared history of two Black communities in Broward County. He has since completed fellowships and worked with Lake Wales Museum, FIU's Wolfson Public Humanities Lab, the Delray Beach Historical Society, the African American Research Library and the Old Dillard Museum, further expanding the ways he shares and preserves local Black history. Emmanuel founded the Black Orchid Foundation and has his own collection at AARLCC, where he actively collects physical and digitally archived data on the history of Attucks High School.
David Paulo: David Paulo, a native of Lauderhill, Florida, has cultivated a career as a digital creative by contributing his skills to showcasing South Florida culture. With a background in graphic design, he has successfully and organically constructed a strong online presence and loyal community following. Through the use of film photography, David has displayed historical landmarks and the cultures not only in South Florida but across the United States on his platforms. David’s commitment to his community has earned him recognition from CBS News Miami, WSVN 7News, the Miami Herald, WLRN, and more for his community outreach and initiatives. David is the youngest person in Broward County to hold his own special collections archive at AARLCC.
Oscar Costero is a Venezuelan-born economist and digital trainer based in the Inland Pacific Northwest. A Wikipedian since 2005, he has spent over a decade organizing and leading workshops that empower online communities to access and contribute knowledge in their own language.
