The announcement of President Guy Parmelin's resignation from the Federal Council on 2 October, effective on 31 December, triggered a by-election that will take place on 9 December 2026. The People's Party announced that candidates have until 23 October to nominate themselves as a candidate.[1][2]
As per an informal agreement between the major political parties known as the magic formula, the only candidates will be from Parmelin's party, the People's Party. His successor will take over the leadership of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER).
