Jim I think you're right, and maybe part of the difficulty is that there are lots of features. Combined with a lot of states that need managing (checked out files, index, committed to local branch, remote branches) it becomes difficult to choose and stay on the correct path. For example during rebase you need to utilize "push --hard", but then you might destroy data pushed by your peers, if for some reason they have committed to the same branch earlier (these situations do happen). So strategy is great, but reality may become very complex...

Interesting! I've looked at Fossil a while ago, will check it again. My impression at the time was that it's easier to use, but may not be a very good fit for large scale development (e.g. it stores the entire repo in a single file SQLite db). Are you using Fossil? What are your impressions?
