Hi Lucas Werkmeister,
The Wikimedia Foundation is asking for your feedback in a survey about your experience with Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia. The purpose of this survey is to learn how well the Foundation is supporting your work on wiki and how we can change or improve things in the future. The opinions you share will directly affect the current and future work of the Wikimedia Foundation.
This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Welcome! Please use this broom responsibly ;)
Hi Lucas,
as you might have already noticed, I added you to the interface administrator user group a couple of minutes ago. We haven't got an automated welcome template with all those helpful links, so you'll have to do with this manual message and a wooden broom ;) Thank you for your work and congratulations! odder (talk) 08:51, 20 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lucas Werkmeister,
There are only a few weeks left to take the Community Insights Survey! We are 30% towards our goal for participation. If you have not already taken the survey, you can help us reach our goal!
With this poll, the Wikimedia Foundation gathers feedback on how well we support your work on wiki. It only takes 15-25 minutes to complete, and it has a direct impact on the support we provide.

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for your help at Template:PD-USGov-Military, it’s much appreciated! I added an archived link to show where the old seal originated from. I do have another request: I am trying to update Template:PD-USGov-USDA’s logo to the agency’s seal to match all of the other US Cabinet agencies but can’t figure out the template. Do you know how and if so, can you explain it to me, please?
I’m tempted to update it (along with a majority of the PD-USGov templates) to match Template:PD-USGov-HHS’s layout as most of the templates haven’t been updated since 2009 or 2010 and it’s much easier for template editors/admin to edit should they need to. What’s your thoughts? Should I discuss is somewhere before making the layout changes? Thanks, Corky06:10, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear interface administrator,
This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.
There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.
As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.
— Speravir– 00:11, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello Lucas - I'm writing because you edited this template recently. Is there any chance that you can action this request to remove the requirement for a publication date? That wording was introduced without being specifically discussed years ago, and no Commons admins have taken action despite various attempts to draw attention to it. Thank you. I have been playing with AC/DC and found a category with over 2,000 entries (Category:British Rail Class 43s of Great Western Railway (First Group)) AC/DC does not like this very much. It has to load every image before I get the depicts box. On Safari it has been loading the category for about an hour now. I closed the box, loaded it again and now it is frozen. No contributions are happening on my account.
Last night I set it running and it stopped with an error. When it restarted it didn't do anything. I know this is not a good error report but if you play with AC/DC on the massive category you'll see what I mean. Secretlondon (talk) 14:24, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I’ve reverted my changes, it turns out they broke the gadget in general (I guess when I tested it immediately after saving, the old code was still cached). Sorry about that. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 16:14, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@JopkeB: I don’t think so, sorry… I’ve just been fulfilling edit requests. I don’t know Cat-a-lot’s code at all (I don’t even use the gadget myself), so I have no idea why it doesn’t work or what one would have to change to make it work. If someone else can figure it out (probably by copying the code to a user script and then tinkering with it there), I can apply the resulting fix to the gadget once it’s ready. It works only after changing the default of Privacy Badger to block only cookies but not domain "uicdn.toast.com". If you'd like to make it more accessible, I guess try to replace how much that domain is used (or remove it) or try changing this default Privacy Badger setting. Other than that this would be a thing to put in the FAQ for those who have this addon since it usually never causes any problems like that. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
First step is to get it functional. And then yes a FAQ around Privacy Badger blocking functionality will be required. Not sure if it is possible to remove this domain and for it to still work. Will look. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 10:52, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I checked github and there is no changes except chromedriver, so I was supprised with this change. Not that I protest - as long as its a11y and works is fine for me. Hi, I have a couple of Outreachy-related tasks that need to be solved. The first one involves my proposal that Outreachy candidates could develop Cat-a-lot in Beta Commons, which would require howto documentation (phab: T389317). However, the Beta Commons abuse filter rules were so strict that the user who was writing the documentation was immediately blocked as a new user adding external links to a user page.
Would it be possible for you to unblock Adiba_anjum3 and add Adiba to the autoconfirmed user group in Beta Commons?
As I expect that you are the most prominent person to actually implement the merging to official code, I would like to ask if the list works for you and if there is something that should be addressed more to make the review+merge process more straightforward, or does this work for you as it is? --Zache (talk) 19:46, 9 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Zache: The page could be useful, but the requests should still be tagged with {{Edit request}} – as you can tell, I’m not always the fastest to respond ;)
But I wonder what the best way to go about this is. Edit requests, at least the way I use them (which is to watch the category and get “added to category” events in the watchlist), have the problem that additional edit requests on a page are less visible (because adding a second edit request to the page won’t add it to the category again). This is often not a problem, but it’s sometimes an issue with e.g. MediaWiki talk:Copyupload-allowed-domains, and it would affect Cat-a-lot too. I wonder if it would be useful to have one subpage per Outreachy Cat-a-lot edit request? (They could still be transcluded elsewhere.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:56, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was wondering about the status of the merging :) I know you're busy, and the merge request is long, so reviewing it thoroughly (beyond just checking that the code doesn't contain anything directly harmful) is time-consuming. Even so, it would be nice to have the changes merged—not just T395770, but later also the changes made during the internship period—before Outreachy ends at the end of August. From a technical perspective, merging and handling potential breakages is something I can do myself as well, so I was thinking that I could apply for admin rights to Commons and see how it goes. Note: We're currently making changes based on Peli's feedback about T395770, so merging isn't urgent right now. However, I think I should apply for adminship now if I want it to be ready by August. --Zache (talk) 12:31, 18 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I haven’t gotten around to reviewing the code yet. I can try to take a look now, though I guess with the ongoing discussion I won’t make any edits yet. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 13:06, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think it is a good idea to wait and include fixes for the issues that Peli described, even though the majority of them were actually new findings and not regressions from T395770. In any case, thank you for merging the HotCat change. --Zache (talk) 05:29, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think that it is ready for an update. It includes the fixes @Peli reported, and they have been in testing for some time now. There were some changes four days ago, but they were either opt-in or restored the original behavior. I expect that there will be new comments and feedback related to UI changes when it goes live, and I am ready to update the code based on those. --Zache (talk) 08:11, 13 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

As you some time ago added comment to T265573 - do you think that there is any chance that this will be implemented? Because its really big problem for people coming to me. PMG (talk) 15:23, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don’t think it’s likely to happen soon, to be honest :/ it would require a new parameter in the relevant Wikibase APIs, as well as UX work to figure out how it’s going to be made available to the user (a checkbox somewhere in the SDC UI? user preference to mark all SDC edits as minor?) and then some more development to wire it all up in WikibaseMediaInfo. I don’t know how would be likely to work on that… Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 08:19, 9 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Gute Nachmittag!
