The early Personal LaserWriter models with lettered suffixes were based on the Canon LBP-LX print engine and shared the same printer model number (M2000). They are compatible with HP LaserJet IIP and IIIP toner cartridges. Later models with numerical suffixes used Canon's more compact LBP-PX engine, also used by the HP LaserJet 4P.[2][3]
