Rationale and discussion
[edit]This thread at the project chat suggested someting weird ocurred with Wikimedia category (Q4167836). In some moment of the history, some item has been merged into Wikimedia category (Q4167836), causing to be two different things: MediaWiki non-main namespace (Q35252665), and Wikimedia project page (Q14204246). Since Wikimedia category (Q4167836) was originally intended to be Wikimedia project page (Q14204246) (an item with sitelinks regarding a page about "categorization" in different namespaces depending on the project), it needs to be splitted-off
The first alternative was to move all the links from the items that links to Wikimedia category (Q4167836) through instance of (P31). However, there are millions of items linked, making the migration inviable. So the second alternative is to move all sitelinks to a new item, apply the proper modeling, and model Wikimedia category (Q4167836) in order to be MediaWiki non-main namespace (Q35252665).
Since there are not enough consensus reached, aside my unilateral actions that has been promptly reverted, I bring this case as a RfC. --Amitie 10g (talk) 16:00, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe, you can be more explicit about what the goal is the value you see from making this change? ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 09:45, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- I think I been enough explicit, but let me repeat: the item represent two different things, as I stated above. The goal of the proposal is to create a new item about Wikimedia project page (Q14204246) and move the sitelinks to the new item, because moving the statements to a new item instead is inviable since there are millions of those ones. - "I think I been enough explicit" I don't think so, but maybe you are right and other people will engage with your proposal in the current form. When writing AFC writing them in a way to help people who have not thought about the issue develop an opinion about it without engaging in much extra work is important. - I don't think so either. I think from reading the post that a property for help pages got merged into Wikimedia category, and you want to revert it by altering 1 million pages? What is the benefit vs the risk? What do we do with all the commons links that are neither? Secretlondon (talk) 11:08, 7 October 2026 (UTC)
- This is why provided the other solution, moving the sitelinks to a new item rather than those million of claims. Amitie 10g (talk) 19:14, 10 October 2026 (UTC)

- The items I've used this for have been neither of those two - they have linked to categories on commons. When we add category for the interior of the item (P7561) to an item we need to make a separate item for the category. Normal commons categories using Commons category (P373) do not need an item making for the category, but the others do not link to the category itself, but link to an item about the category. Examples of these instances of Wikimedia categories: Category:Views from Sapporo TV Tower (Q104011721), Category:Interior of Palácio do Raio (Q73397950) and Category:Exterior of the Immaculate Conception Church (San Cristóbal de La Laguna) (Q98556494). There are many, many of these. Secretlondon (talk) 17:43, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- category for the interior of the item (P7561), category for the exterior of the item (P8596), category for the view of the item (P8989) and category for the view from the item (P8933) all need an item making which is is always instance of (P31) Wikimedia category (Q4167836), category combines topics (P971) interior/exterior/view and subject, and then linking to the category itself with Commons category (P373) and commons under multilingual sites. It's bureaucratic but all such links are structured like this. There are 22,400 uses of interior category, 4,750 exterior category and 8,614 view of the item and 7,265 view from the item.
