Motivation

[edit]

style of karate (P7406) already exists, but that property can only be used for karate. Traditional Japanese martial arts have eighteen variations based on the weapons (Bugei jūhappan (Q4986153)). For that reason, I argue the property corresponding to schools of swordsmanship and the like are also necessary.--禁樹なずな (talk) 01:53, 14 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Why not just use educated at (P69)? Mbch331 (talk) 16:25, 17 August 2026 (UTC)reply

You could practice a style of martial arts whithout having been educated at the school which originated the style. educated at (P69) would imply the latter, the proposed property does not. --Volvox (talk) 19:40, 17 August 2026 (UTC)reply

@禁樹なずな: Is this property supposed to be specific to Japanese martial arts? If not, ryūha (Q2386338) would be too specific, and some examples of non Japanese styles would be helpful. --Volvox (talk) 19:42, 17 August 2026 (UTC)reply

This property can be used for martial arts worldwide, such as Chinese martial arts (Q3705105), silat (Q569801), and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Q189336). If a corresponding item exists in Wikidata, it can also be subdivided, for example, Yang-style t'ai chi ch'uan (Q1893959) and Machado Jiu-Jitsu (Q3274246).--禁樹なずな (talk) 00:57, 18 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Ok. To reflect this, I have changed the subject item from ryūha (Q2386338) to type of fighting style (Q66088122) and added two new examples. I also added martial arts (Q11417) and fictional martial arts (Q55566151) as domain. To make it clear, that this property is not about the educational institutions martial arts school (Q135495953), I suggest renaming the property to "martial arts style". --Volvox (talk) 18:02, 22 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Thank you for your insightful observations. I agree with your opinion.--禁樹なずな (talk) 07:00, 31 August 2026 (UTC)reply
educated at (P69) - has the issue that you can train an martial art style without attending a specific school or schools which teach multiple martial art styles, which makes it not sufficient to cover all the cases this intents to cover.
movement (P135) is concerned with general social or intellectual movements, I don't think a martial arts style fits into this.
So I think having a generic property that encompasses all martial arts styles and not just one is an useful new property.
There also dance style (P10741) which would be a similar property for a different, but adjacent field of sports. Kordishal (talk) 14:18, 4 October 2026 (UTC)reply
"martial arts style" seems to me the better name then the current "school of martial arts". It being an equivalent to dance style (P10741) is nice. While not having looked at all possible examples I would expect that style as a word that's a bit broader then school has some examples that it covers better.
