Renowned NASA Astronaut Jim Lovell died at the age of 97 on Thursday in Lake Forest, Illinois, NASA announced. Lovell was one of NASA’s most experienced astronauts in the agency’s early years, flying on four missions: Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13. The Apollo 13 mission nearly ended in disaster after an oxygen tank explosion severely damaged the spacecraft. Thanks to a herculean effort by Lovell and his crew, they safely returned to Earth, captivating and inspiring audiences worldwide.
Lovell shared a lifelong partnership with his wife, Marilyn Lillie Gerlach. The couple married on June 6, 1952, in a ceremony at St. Anne's Church in Annapolis, after dating since high school. Marilyn, originally from Wisconsin, transferred to George Washington University to be closer to Lovell during his time at the Naval Academy.
Together, Jim and Marilyn raised four children: Barbara, James (often called Jay), Susan, and Jeffrey.
