Debian did carry a slight advantage in the PostMark disk benchmark while for most of the file-system tests there isn't much of a difference when using the default EXT4 file-system.

In some of the compute workloads like NAS Parallel Benchmarks and Parboil, the newer toolchain on Ubuntu 19.10/20.04 (GCC 9) and Debian Testing can yield sizable improvements over the current Debian 10.3 stable series and Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. There is also newer OpenMPI and other enhancements that particularly benefit newer CPU microarchitectures.

Interestingly Debian seemed to deliver slightly better OpenJDK Java performance than Ubuntu at least with the Renaissance benchmark. OpenJDK 11 was used on all the platforms.

Debian also ended up running ever so slightly faster than Ubuntu on the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X for ArrayFire.
