Singer and Composer. She was one of the best-known Portuguese pop and world music singers of the last three decades. Her music was influenced by African, Portuguese and North-American sounds and traditions, and she usually sang in Portuguese, English and Creole. Tavares, who was of Cape-Verdean descent, was abandoned by her parents and was raised by an adoptive grandmother. She started singing at an early age, and gained fame at 15, in 1993/1994, when she participated in the first edition of a talent show called "Chuva das Estrelas," which she won, after singing Whitney Houston's "One Moment In Time" in the final. In 1994, she was asked to participate in the RTP Song Festival, an annual competition promoted by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, since 1964, with the aim of selecting a song for the Eurovision Song Contest. She competed with her hit single "Chamar a Música" and won, participating in the 1994 Eurovision, placing 8th. She won the Portuguese Golden Globe for Best Singer that same year. She released her first album "Sara Tavares e Shout!," a collaboration with the Portuguese choir Shout, in 1996. One of the songs on the album, "Longe do Mundo," an adaptation of the theme "God Help The Outcasts," from the Disney classic "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1996), received an honorable mention from Disney for best international version. Another hit single, "Solta-se o Bejo" featuring Ala dos Namorados, was released in 1999. She released her second album, "Mi Ma Bô," that same year, which featured the hit singles "Nha Cretcheu" and "Eu sei..." Her third album, "Balancê" (2005), received national acclaim and went platinum. It featured the singles "Balancê" and "Bom Feeling." In 2008 she released a live concert DVD entitled "Alive in Lisboa." Her fourth album "Xinti" and the single "Ponto de Luz" were released in 2009. "The Most Beautiful Thing" by Nelly Furtado featuring Sara Tavares was released in 2012. Her fifth and last album, "Fitxadu" (2017), received a Latin Grammy nomination in the category of Best Roots Music Album in the Portuguese Language. It featured the singles "Coisas Bunitas" and "Brincar de Casamento." Tavares also collaborated with Tiago Bettencourt, Uxía, Buraka Som Sistema, Carlão and Richie Campbell. She had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009, and for that reason she stepped away from the stages for a few years, later returning to the spotlight in 2017. Her most recent work, the single "Kurtidu," was released in September 2023. Tavares died on November 19, 2023, at the age of 45, at Hospital da Luz, in Lisbon.
