Ivy Litvinov, the wife of the Soviet ambassador to Washington during World War II, visited Stanford to look at the D.H. Lawrence correspondence in the University Archives in 1943. She was staying at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. With great trepidation, she then took the dangerous trip back to Moscow to join her husband Maxim Litvinov. After the war she was able to publish an article about her encounter with Lawrence before her marriage. How she and her husband managed to survive in the Stalin era remains a mystery.
