U.S. Senator. He was a politician who attended local schools before studying law and admitted to the bar. His family had relocated from Virginia to Kentucky about 1784. As a Democratic Republican, he was elected to the Kentucky State Senate, serving February 2, 1815, to March 3, 1819. He then was elected to the U.S. Senate for Kentucky, serving from October 19, 1820 to March 3, 1825, and at the point, he returned to Kentucky to practice law until his death on his plantation.
