Event:Cross-wiki Code Collaboration Workshop
Cross-wiki Code Collaboration Workshop 2026
[edit]About
[edit]Following the brainstorming session on cross-wiki code collaboration across South Asian languages, we are now moving forward with a pilot to explore how Wikimedia projects can collaborate more effectively on wiki-based code, particularly Lua modules.
The pilot will initially involve the following Wikimedia projects:
- Hindi Wikipedia (hiwiki)
- Punjabi Wikipedia (pawiki)
- Odia Wikipedia (orwiki)
- Telugu Wikipedia (tewiki)
- Malayalam Wikipedia (mlwiki)
The pilot will begin with a hands-on workshop where participants will learn how to set up, manage, develop, and use versioned Lua modules across wikis.
Background
[edit]Wiki-based code such as templates and Lua modules plays an important role in creating and maintaining content across Wikimedia projects. However, code is generally maintained independently on individual wikis, which can make collaboration and reuse across language projects difficult.
The cross-wiki code collaboration project aims to explore ways to make it easier for communities to share, maintain, develop, and reuse code across wikis.
Following the earlier brainstorming session with communities working on South Asian language wikis, this pilot will provide an opportunity to test a workflow for collaborative Lua module development and versioning in real-world Wikimedia projects.
You can read more about the initiative at Cross-wiki code collaboration.
What will be covered?
[edit]The workshop will be practical and will introduce participants to the complete workflow for developing and managing Lua modules using GitLab and on-wiki versioning.
During the workshop, participants will learn:
- How to set up a Lua module repository in GitLab
- How to make a wiki recognize versioning of Lua modules
- How to manage module versions on-wiki
- How to use an imported module through Produnto on a template
- How to use developer tools for module development and test local modules on your wiki
- How the workflow can be applied through a real-life example
Prerequisites
[edit]Participants are requested to create a GitLab account before attending the workshop.
Please create your account in advance by following the GitLab account registration guide Having an account ready before the workshop will allow participants to follow the practical exercises without delays.
Follow-up
[edit]After the workshop, we will follow up with participants to collect feedback and learn about their experience.
