Announcement

  • Retiring Windows Information Protection (WIP) and Microsoft Defender Application Guard (MDAG) in Microsoft Edge. The WIP and MDAG code paths are being retired from Microsoft Edge, aligning Edge with the Windows platform. Windows deprecated both technologies and removed them in Windows 11, version 24H2.

Only tenants that configured WIP or MDAG in Microsoft Edge are impacted by this change. Both features are off by default and require an admin to turn them on, so tenants that never enabled them are not affected. In practice this is a small, Windows 10 population. Both features were committed for Windows 10 only, and both are already unavailable on Windows 11, version 24H2.

For organizations using WIP, use Microsoft Purview Information Protection, Microsoft Purview endpoint DLP, and Data Loss Prevention and also Intune app protection policies for data protections instead of WIP.

For organizations using MDAG, use the built-in Microsoft Edge for Business security capabilities and Microsoft Edge browser natively supports hardware isolation instead. Also further, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Enhanced Security Mode, Data Loss Prevention, and website typo protection is available.

This change rolls out through the normal Microsoft Edge release channels, and will reach general availability with Microsoft Edge Stable 154 around September 24, 2026.

  • Deprecating the unload event. Microsoft Edge is changing the default behavior of the web platform unload event. As the rollout progresses, pages will no longer run unload event handlers unless the site explicitly permits them.

    • In Edge 152 and 153, unload handlers will stop firing by default for 60% of page loads unless the site explicitly enables them through Permissions Policy.
    • In Edge 154, the rollout will increase to 80% of page loads.
    • In Edge 155, the rollout will reach 100% of page loads.

The unload event is not a dependable way to save data, perform cleanup, or report the end of a session because browsers and operating systems can suspend or terminate pages without firing it. It can also prevent pages from using the back/forward cache, which may make back and forward navigation slower.

Web developers should migrate to lifecycle events and APIs designed for these scenarios. The long-term direction of the web platform is to remove support for unload.

Feature updates

  • Tracking prevention when browsing InPrivate. Microsoft Edge is unifying the tracking prevention experience for non-InPrivate and InPrivate browsing windows. The toggle that allowed users to select “Strict” tracking prevention for InPrivate mode is removed. This toggle, previously in edge://settings/privacy/trackingPrevention and on the InPrivate new tab page (NTP), is no longer available. Microsoft Edge now uses the same tracking prevention setting as a normal browsing window when in InPrivate mode.

  • Changes to local IP address detection for proxy auto-config (PAC) scripts. Microsoft Edge reports a local network address to proxy auto-config (PAC) scripts through the myIpAddress() and myIpAddressEx() functions. To choose that address, Microsoft Edge connects a UDP socket to a fixed destination address and reports the source address that the operating system selects for that route. Microsoft Edge now uses Chromium's default destinations for this lookup instead of Edge-specific ones: the default IPv4 destination changes from 20.76.201.171 to 8.8.8.8, and the default IPv6 destination changes from 2603:1020:201:10::10f to 2001:4860:4860::8888. The new values are the Google Public DNS addresses that Chromium uses by default. Microsoft Edge sends no packets to these addresses and uses them only so that the operating system selects a route and a source address, so no firewall change is needed.

Because the destination is only a routing sentinel, any host route, policy-based route, or null route that matches it determines which network interface the lookup observes. On a device with more than one active connection, such as a VPN and Wi-Fi at the same time, a route covering the destination can cause a PAC script to receive an address from an unintended network. Organizations should review routes for both the previous and the new destinations. A route that directs the destination to a particular interface causes PAC scripts to observe that interface's address, while a route that leaves the destination unreachable causes Microsoft Edge to fall back to its other address-detection methods.

Administrators who need the lookup to follow a particular network can set a destination that routes over it, using the new PacMyIpAddressIPv4ProbeAddress and PacMyIpAddressIPv6ProbeAddress policies.

  • Fading tabs experience retired. The fading tab experience will be removed from the Microsoft Edge browser. The Fade inactive tabs setting will no longer be available in edge://settings/system/managePerformance and users will no longer see tabs fade. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this change, check back as we continue the rollout.

  • Summarize videos toggle in YouTube video menu. For eligible Microsoft Edge for Business users, the YouTube video hover overlay now includes a Summarize toggle. Selecting it opens Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat to summarize the video. Availability respects the organization’s Copilot page-context policy, user consent, and data loss prevention protections.

  • Update to WebView2 DowngradeVersion policy. The DowngradeVersion policy allows admins to temporarily roll back specific applications to a previous WebView2 Evergreen Runtime version. The DowngradeVersion policy now allows admins to roll back up to four versions (N-1, N-2, N-3, or N-4), which aligns with the Microsoft Edge 2-week release cadence.

Announcements

  • Microsoft Edge supported operating systems for macOS. Microsoft Edge version 150 is the last release that supports macOS 12 (Monterey). Microsoft Edge version 151 or later requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. For more information, see Microsoft Edge supported operating systems.

  • Migration to improved V2 architecture for Workspaces. Workspaces, introduced in Edge in 2022, allows users to create durable sets of tabs that can be saved and shared with others. In order to improve reliability and performance of this feature, the following changes are being made:

    • Migrating data for saved Workspaces from OneDrive/SharePoint to Edge Sync service
    • Removing the collaboration/share functionality of this feature

For organizations who have disabled Sync through policy, the existing v1 Workspace data will still be migrated to the new architecture. New v2 Workspaces created after migration won't sync across devices and will remain local to each device. This update occurs on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and continues rolling out through Edge v150. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces.

  • Sidebar app list is being retired. We're simplifying Microsoft Edge. The sidebar app list will be retired in the near future. New apps can no longer be added to the sidebar, and apps currently pinned in the app tower will be removed in a future update. Sidebar app policies will no longer be supported, and any configured sidebar app policies will no longer be applied. For more information, see Streamline access to your favorite sites and apps with Sidebar in Microsoft Edge.

Feature Updates

  • Clarify choices surrounding third-party cookie settings. Language under 'Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies' is updated to better describe the choices users have when managing third-party cookies.

  • Sign in to Edge with a Google account. Users can now sign in to Microsoft Edge using a Google account in addition to a Microsoft account from the profile menu and Edge sign-in screen. Available for Windows and macOS devices. Admins can control availability of this feature using the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Intune MAM Protected Downloads. The protected downloads feature for Intune MAM now saves downloaded files to the 'Documents > Microsoft Edge > Downloads' folder in OneDrive.

  • Enterprise WebView2 runtime downgrade via DowngradeVersion policy. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 150, enterprises can actively use the 'DowngradeVersion' policy to downgrade WebView2 applications. Administrators can temporarily roll back specific applications to a previous WebView2 Evergreen Runtime version (N-1 or N-2) using the new 'DowngradeVersion' policy in msedgewebview2.admx. The policy allows enterprises to mitigate critical regressions by specifying per-application executable-to-version mappings. The Edge Updater installs the target version side-by-side, and the WebView2 Loader redirects targeted applications accordingly. Downgrades automatically expire with each new WebView2 release. Applications pinned to N-1 remain on the same version (now becoming N-2) and automatically update in the next release, while applications pinned to N-2 revert to the current Evergreen Runtime. The policy applies only to enterprise-managed devices (domain-joined or MDM-enrolled). For more information, see Microsoft Edge WebView2 Policy Documentation.

  • Update to the "View in File Explorer" feature. When the ConfigureViewInFileExplorer policy is enabled, the View in File Explorer feature can be used in SharePoint document libraries. Microsoft Edge has updated the feature to enforce additional validation and restrictions when triggered by webpages to improve security.

  • Security Update Alerts in the Edge management service. Administrators can choose a severity threshold and receive alerts when a new Microsoft Edge update includes security fixes that meet or exceed that level, including zero-day fixes. This helps organizations quickly identify updates that may require attention while avoiding unnecessary notifications for routine releases. Note: This experience is in public preview and is available by opting in to Targeted Release in the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see Monitoring dashboard.

Announcement

This update occurs on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and will continue rolling out in Edge v149. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces.

Feature Updates

  • Passkey Sync for Enterprise Users. Microsoft Edge is introducing support for passkey synchronization for enterprise users, enabling secure, passwordless authentication across devices. Passkeys created in Edge can now be synced seamlessly, improving sign-in experience while maintaining strong security standards. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this change, check back as we continue the rollout.

  • Enterprise WebView2 runtime downgrade via DowngradeVersion policy. Administrators can temporarily roll back specific applications to a previous WebView2 Evergreen Runtime version (N-1 or N-2) using the new DowngradeVersion policy in msedgewebview2.admx. The Downgrade Version policy allows enterprises to mitigate critical regressions by specifying per-application exe-to-version mappings. The Edge Updater installs the target version side-by-side, and the WebView2 Loader redirects targeted apps accordingly.

Downgrades auto-expire with each new WebView2 release: apps pinned to N-1 remain on the same version (now becoming N-2) and will auto-update in the next release, while apps pinned to N-2 will revert to the current Evergreen version. The policy applies only to enterprise-managed devices (domain-joined or MDM-enrolled). For more information, see Microsoft Edge WebView2 Policy Documentation | Microsoft Learn.

  • Collections retirement. Collections have been removed in this update. Users can no longer access or use the feature. To keep saved content, users can export it, or move all pages to Favorites before updating to Microsoft Edge Stable 149. For more information, see Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support.

  • Modern, unified, and updated Look and Feel. Microsoft Edge has updated the Look and Feel to give customers a unified experience across all of Microsoft AI surfaces including Copilot and Bing. This changes multiple elements of the UX such as spacing, corners, fonts, default colors, etc.

  • Custom primary password retirement. Users are no longer able to create a new custom primary password in Edge Settings edge://settings/autofill/passwords/settings. Any users who are still using a custom primary password is automatically migrated to device authentication. Additionally, the PrimaryPasswordSetting policy will no longer support the WithCustomPrimaryPassword option. For more information, see Keep your saved passwords private in Microsoft Edge | Microsoft Support.

  • Unifying Copilot Chat policy controls. The Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy is the standard for configuring Copilot Chat. Previously, this behavior was controlled by blocking the Copilot extension, either explicitly or by using the * wildcard via the ExtensionSettings or ExtensionInstallBlockList policies. Extension and sidebar policies no longer affect the appearance or functionality of Copilot Chat. Copilot address bar suggestions were also tied to extension policy settings. Starting in Microsoft Edge version 149, admins can use the CopilotAddressBarSuggestionsEnabled policy to manage this behavior.

  • Intune MAM Protected Downloads. The protected downloads feature for Intune MAM is now available for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) devices, which aren't managed by a tenant.

Announcements

This update occurs on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and will continue rolling out in Edge v148. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces.

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. The Edge internal container page that hosts compliant M365 Copilot chat in the sidebar has been updated. Blocking internal edge:// or chrome-untrusted:// URLs isn't recommended as this may lead to unexpected errors and will disable the Microsoft 365 Sidebar Copilot Chat experience. For more information, see Allowlist for Microsoft Edge endpoints.

Feature Updates

  • M365 Copilot Search relevance using work browsing history. With admin approval, Microsoft Edge can now send selected work-related browsing history from third-party apps to Microsoft 365 Copilot to improve search result ranking. When a user searches on Microsoft 365 Copilot Search, M365 Copilot will also surface results from work browsing history when relevant, helping users find recently visited work pages faster. Admins can control availability of this feature using the ShareBrowsingHistoryWithCopilotSearchAllowed policy.

  • Password affiliation service. Password autofill suggestions in Edge are currently based on top-level domain matching, which means the same credentials can be suggested on sites like account.microsoft.com and office.microsoft.com. With this feature, Edge groups related domains together across various desktop and mobile properties called affiliations. When a customer visits a URL, the Edge client queries the affiliations backend to obtain "affiliated groups" for that URL. The process involves sending a hash of the visited URLs to the service, which then returns a list of affiliated URLs and ensures that the relevant credentials will be displayed in the autofill suggestions across affiliated domains. Admins must use both the PasswordManagerEnabled and PrimaryPasswordSetting policies together to control access to this feature. Configuring both policies allow admins to ensure no passwords get saved, lookups for autofill are disabled and affiliation endpoint won't be queried.

  • Copilot New Tab Page. Search, chat, and explore the web from one search box with Copilot suggested actions and curated work content to help your users get things done faster on the new, refreshed Copilot New Tab Page. Users can also view personalized news and activities. Admins can control availability to this feature using the CopilotNewTabPageEnabled policy. For more information, see Configure the Copilot new tab page.

  • Shadow AI. Currently admins can set Purview DLP policies to protect sensitive data from being sent to any Generative AI apps, users get blocked from sending their prompts to LLM when this is triggered and stops their workflow. This new add-on to the feature shows a new UI that will give users the option to be redirected to M365 Copilot, which will open and navigate to this M365 Copilot tab and allow them to send the same prompt there.

  • Enhanced Autofill. For desktop users, Microsoft Edge can now autofill additional document types-including passports, driver's licenses, and other specialized forms-on top of your saved addresses. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Allow M365 authentication popups in work profiles. When users are signed in with a work account, some Microsoft 365 sites (for example, microsoft.com, cloud.microsoft, and microsoft365.com) may open authentication pop-up windows to Microsoft sign-in endpoints such as login.microsoftonline.com, login.live.com, or login.microsoft.com. These pop-ups are required to complete sign-in. Microsoft Edge now allows authentication pop-up windows from Microsoft first-party services by default. Admins can control availability to this feature using the M365AuthPopupsInWorkEnabled policy. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Updated AI settings page. Settings for Copilot features now are housed under one AI settings page to create a cohesive setting experience. Existing admin controls and policy configurations continue to apply.

Feature Updates

  • Browsing with Copilot Public Preview now open for signups. We're excited to announce that the Limited Public Preview for browsing with Copilot in Edge for Business is now open for admin signups. Browsing with Copilot introduces agentic browsing to the enterprise, allowing Copilot to navigate websites, fill in information, and complete multi-step tasks on behalf of users. This helps employees offload repetitive browser work and move faster from information to action, all within a managed, secure environment. Admins can now request access to the preview in this form and start bringing Browsing with Copilot to their organization. For more information, see Allowlist for Microsoft Edge endpoints.

  • Updated AI settings page happening in May. Settings for Copilot features will be housed under one AI settings page to create a cohesive setting experience. Existing admin controls and policy configurations continue to apply. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this change, check back as we continue the rollout.

  • Collections retirement. Microsoft begins retiring Collections. A banner is shown to existing Collections users. Users are no longer able to add new items to Collections. To keep saved content, users can export it, or move all pages to Favorites. For more information, see Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support.

This update occurs on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and will continue rolling out in Edge v147. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces.

  • Custom primary password deprecation. Users will no longer be able to create a new custom primary password in Edge Settings edge://settings/autofill/passwords/settings. Users who already have a custom primary password configured will see a warning that the feature won't be available from June 4, 2026. On June 4, 2026, any users who are still using a custom primary password will be automatically migrated to device authentication. Additionally, the PrimaryPasswordSetting policy will no longer support the WithCustomPrimaryPassword option.

Feature Updates

  • Clarify choices surrounding third-party cookie settings. Language under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies will be clarified to better describe the choices users have in managing third-party cookies. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Extensions monitoring in the Edge management service. The Microsoft Edge management service now allows admins to gain visibility into extensions installed across their managed users. From the extensions monitoring page, admins can see which extensions have been installed as well as manage user requests for blocked extensions. Note: This experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see Microsoft Edge Extensions Monitoring.

  • Add setting to create or remove profile desktop shortcut for Windows. A new toggle is added in the profile settings to give users the ability to create or remove the profile desktop shortcut. Available only for Windows devices. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

Note: This experience is in public preview and can be enabled via the Edge management service inside the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. The release timeline has been updated, and general availability is now expected in early May. For more information, see Configuring Copilot Features | Microsoft Learn..

  • Validate Edge builds early with enterprise preview. Enterprise preview provides a simpler way for admins to flight pre-release Edge builds to their users. To reduce friction and bolster usage, users will receive pre-release builds directly inside of their Stable Edge application. Admins can allow users to easily opt-out of the preview experience, using built-in rollback to switch between their pre-release and stable channels with ease. Microsoft 365 admin center users can configure the feature, view their flighting population, and receive personalized recommendations all in one place. Note: Part of this experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see Get started with Enterprise Preview in Microsoft Edge.

  • Expanded Microsoft Purview Information Protection (MIP) support for Microsoft 365 Online. Microsoft Purview Information Protection enables data loss prevention (DLP) controls in Microsoft 365 documents by limiting or preventing certain actions on documents with specific sensitivity levels. When administrators enable Microsoft Purview Information Protection in the Edge management service, the policy enforces secure enterprise browser access for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Starting in Edge version 147, support is also available for Outlook on the web (OWA). For more information, see Protect Office documents with Microsoft Purview Information Protection labeling.

  • Copilot integration in Immersive Reader. Immersive Reader improves reading accessibility by simplifying webpages and removing visual distractions. When using Immersive Reader, users can now Summarize, Explain, and Chat with Copilot directly through the Immersive Reader toolbar. Available on Windows devices.

Announcements

  • Collections retirement. Microsoft will begin retiring Collections. A banner will be shown to existing Collections users, and users will no longer be able to add new items to Collections. To keep saved content, users can export it or move all pages to Favorites. For more information, see Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge.

  • Microsoft Edge supported operating systems for macOS. Edge version 150 is currently planned to be the last release that supports macOS 12 (Monterey). Under this plan, Edge version 151 or later will require macOS 13 (Ventura) or later.

  • Migration to improved V2 architecture for Workspaces. Workspaces, introduced in Edge in 2022, allows users to create durable sets of tabs that can be saved and shared with others. To improve reliability and performance of this feature, the following changes are being made:

    • Migrating data for saved Workspaces from OneDrive/SharePoint to the Edge Sync service.
    • Removing the collaboration/share functionality of this feature.

For organizations who have disabled Sync through policy, the existing v1 Workspace data will still be migrated to the new architecture. New v2 Workspaces created after migration will not sync across devices and will remain local to each device. This update began rolling out in Edge Stable version 145 and continues rolling out in Edge Stable version 146. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces.

  • Custom primary password deprecation. In Microsoft Edge 146, users will no longer be able to create a new custom primary password in Edge Settings (edge://settings/autofill/passwords/settings). Users who already have a custom primary password configured will see a warning that the feature will not be available starting June 4, 2026. On June 4, 2026, users still using a custom primary password will automatically be migrated to device authentication. Additionally, the PrimaryPasswordSetting policy will no longer support the WithCustomPrimaryPassword option.

Feature Updates

  • Third-party storage partitioning policy updates. The ThirdPartyStoragePartitioningBlockedForOrigins and DefaultThirdPartyStoragePartitioningSetting policies were deprecated in Microsoft Edge version 140 and are now obsolete. They no longer function after Microsoft Edge version 145. The replacement for these policies is usage of the requestStorageAccess method. For more information, see requestStorageAccess() method - Web APIs.

  • New Local Network Access policies. With Microsoft Edge 146 Stable, the following policies are available to mitigate scenarios where Local Network Access restrictions affect cross-origin iframes:

For more information, see Adapting your website for new Local Network Access restrictions in Microsoft Edge.

  • Enterprise New Tab Page experience. Microsoft Edge for Business introduces a modern experience for the New Tab Page (NTP).

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue the rollout.

  • Copilot New Tab Page. Search, chat, and explore the web from one search box with Copilot-suggested actions and curated work content to help users get things done faster on the refreshed Copilot New Tab Page.

Note: This experience is in public preview and can be enabled via the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. General availability is expected in early April. For more information, see Configuring Copilot Mode.

  • Desktop Visual Search. Users can quickly send images to Bing Visual Search from the Edge Desktop Search Bar to identify images, people, animals, and shows; extract, copy, and translate text while preserving formatting. This feature can also help discover products, recipes, locations, and more.

This feature is available on Windows devices. Admins can control availability using the VisualSearchEnabled policy.

  • Tracking prevention when browsing InPrivate. Microsoft Edge is unifying the tracking prevention experience between standard browsing and InPrivate windows. The toggle allowing users to select Strict tracking prevention specifically for InPrivate browsing will be removed.

Previously available in edge://settings/privacy/trackingPrevention and the InPrivate New Tab Page, this toggle will no longer appear. InPrivate browsing will now use the same tracking prevention setting as normal browsing windows.

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout.

  • Improvements to site permissions user interfaces. Site permissions have been redesigned to better align with user expectations. Improvements include changes to the Omnibox and Page Info dialog, and permissions are easier to review and modify in Settings.

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat support for multiple open tabs. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in Edge will soon be able to answer contextual questions about a user's open window. This extends the existing capability which can only access the open page. All existing user settings and policies and DLP considerations will continue to be respected.

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Ground Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in Edge for Business in your open YouTube videos. Get relevant answers and insights about your open YouTube videos in Copilot Chat in Edge.

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Removal of 'Passwords' from Clear Browsing Data. Microsoft Edge is simplifying the Clear browsing data experience edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData by removing the Passwords from the list of data types that can be cleared. This update addresses feedback that users were unintentionally deleting their saved passwords when clearing their browsing history, leading to confusion and sign-in issues. Users can continue to manage, edit, or delete passwords directly from edge://settings/autofill/passwords.

  • Private IP. Private IP expands the capabilities of Edge Secure Network. Edge Secure Network functions as a VPN that helps users securely connect to the internet.

Trackers embedded in websites often monitor browsing activity and infer location from IP addresses. Private IP uses Tracking Prevention block lists to reroute known trackers through Secure Network, helping obscure the user's IP address.

Edge Secure Network is not currently available for managed devices.

Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue the rollout.

  • Upcoming migration to improved V2 architecture for Workspaces.

New v2 Workspaces created after migration will not sync across devices and will remain local to each device. This update will occur on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and will fully roll out starting with Edge Stable v146. Opting out in v145 can be achieved by contacting Microsoft CSS before rollout begins.

Feature Updates

  • Cross Tenant Support using Intune MAM. Edge for Business extends its capability to deliver Intune App Protection Policies via Intune MAM. Organizations are enabled to apply data loss prevention controls to Edge for Business profiles even on devices managed by another tenant. This capability enforces Intune MAM policies-such as clipboard boundaries, watermarking, and protected downloads-within the Edge work profile, ensuring sensitive data remains governed by your tenant. This approach secures cross-tenant scenarios like contractors or mergers without requiring additional apps or disrupting the end user experience. Note: This feature is in public preview. For more information, see Cross-tenant support using Intune MAM

  • Update to Copilot icon in toolbar. The Copilot icon now includes the label "chat" next to it on the toolbar.

  • Update to the AutoplayAllowed policy. The AutoplayAllowed policy has been updated and when the policy is configured to Disabled, Edge will now set media autoplay to "Block" which will disable autoplay on all sites. Previously, configuring the policy to Disabled, set media autoplay to "Limit" which still allowed autoplay on sites with high media engagement or active WebRTC streams.

  • Navigation management for Progressive Web Apps. Microsoft Edge has improved how a Progressive Web App (PWA) handles user navigation. When a user clicks a link, the browser will determine whether it should launch the installed PWA or open a new browser tab to give users a more seamless experience.

Note that part of this experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see Get started with Enterprise Preview in Microsoft Edge.

  • Add "Summarize" and "Explain" Copilot actions in PDF reader. Existing "Ask Copilot" integration in the built-in PDF reader has been expanded by introducing two new actions - "Summarize" and "Explain." These options will allow users to generate a concise overview or simplify complex content within a PDF or selected portion. The new actions build on the existing "Ask Copilot" integration and follow the same enterprise controls and policies.

  • A Refreshed Profile Flyout Experience for Better Clarity and Actionability. The Microsoft Edge profile flyout is updated to deliver a cleaner, more intuitive experience. The refreshed design makes it easier to distinguish between work and personal profiles, manage credentials, and quickly access key settings-all within a polished interface that supports modern browsing needs. With streamlined sign-in, clearer profile types, and organization branding preserved, this update enables a more efficient and trustworthy experience for customers.

  • Securely enable AI generated applications. Leverage the latest AI advancements to build prototypes, learning applications or interactive reports using your favorite tools in Edge without worrying about your data. This extension enables apps to leverage some new security improvements for safely executing AI generated code. Admins can control availability to this feature using the EdgeSafeHostingExtensionEnabled policy.

  • Watermarking Protection in Microsoft Edge for Business. Watermarking Protection in Microsoft Edge helps organizations visibly reinforce data protection policies by overlaying a persistent watermark on sensitive content viewed in the browser. This feature is designed to deter unauthorized sharing, support compliance efforts, and increase user awareness when handling confidential information. For more information, see Watermarking Protection. Note that this experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  • Adding protection against malicious sideloaded extensions. Microsoft Edge will detect and revoke malicious sideloaded extensions.

  • Improved Autofill experience in Microsoft Edge. When users fill in an Address on a form, they'll be prompted to choose whether to save it for future Autofill suggestions. This enhancement ensures Autofill data is saved intentionally by users and reduces unwanted entries as part of their Autofill suggestion.

  • Protected Clipboard in Microsoft Edge for Business. Admins shouldn't have to choose between locking down copy/paste and risking data leaks. Protected Clipboard offers a smarter way for keeping sensitive data safe without disrupting user workflows. Leveraging Purview DLP policies to define trusted boundaries across managed cloud apps. Data inside those admin defined boundaries can stay protected while external data can enter if needed. Granular control for admins. Seamless productivity for users. For more information, see Protected Clipboard. Note that this experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

When a customer visits a URL, the Edge client will query the affiliations backend to obtain "affiliated groups" for that URL. Configuring both policies will allow admins to ensure no passwords will get saved, lookups for autofill will be completely disabled and affiliation endpoint will not be queried. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • New policy to control profile editing. The EditProfileEnabled policy controls whether users can modify profile properties (such as the profile avatar) from the profile setting page. If the policy is enabled or not configured, the edit button is available and users can edit profile properties. If the policy is disabled, the edit button is disabled and users can't edit profile properties.

  • Extensions monitoring in the Edge management service. The Microsoft Edge management service now allows admins to gain visibility into extensions installed across their managed users. From the extensions monitoring page, admins can see which extensions have been installed as well as manage user requests for blocked extensions. Note that: this experience is in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see Microsoft Edge Extensions Monitoring.

  • Introducing a new policy that can enable/disable web app installation from the browser. Admins can control whether users can install web apps through the browser using the WebAppInstallByUserEnabled policy.

  • Announcement page on update experience. Starting in Edge 145, Edge for Business will show a "What's New" page the first time the browser is launched following a major update. The page will help your users understand new features and how to use them for maximum productivity. Admins can control availability to this feature using the WhatsNewPageForEntraProfilesEnabled policy.

  • Faster, more reliable Read Aloud in PDFs. PDF Read Aloud has been updated to significantly reduce time-to-start and improve reliability, while keeping the existing Read Aloud experience and entry points unchanged. This improvement is available only in the new PDF viewer in Edge.

Announcements

  • New WebGL software backend. Microsoft Edge, on Windows systems without a physical GPU, now uses the Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP) rasterizer for WebGL workloads. Prior versions use SwiftShader, which is no longer a supported component. This scenario is most commonly associated with headless environments and virtual machines. On non-Windows platforms, a physical GPU will be required for WebGL moving forward. This change is currently enabled by default starting in Microsoft Edge Stable version 144. Administrators can use the EnableUnsafeSwiftShader policy to temporarily defer the deprecation and continue using SwiftShader. This policy is temporary and scheduled for removal in a future release. Microsoft doesn't guarantee the security of environments where this policy is enabled. For more information, see Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP) Guide - Win32 apps.

Improved Reliability

  • Fixed a browser crash that occurred when attempting to upload a file from a local folder.

Feature Updates

  • Use Primary work profile as default profile to open external links. Microsoft Edge opens external links using the 'Last Used' profile by default. While for enterprise users, the Primary Work Profile (signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID for enrolling the device) is normally the best profile for opening external links. With this feature, for Windows, Edge will check if the Primary Work Profile exists and make it the default profile for opening external links if available. For Mac and Linux, if only one work profile signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID account is found, it's treated as the Primary Work Profile. Admins can control availability to this feature using the EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithPrimaryWorkProfileEnabled policy.

  • Microsoft Edge management enrollment token policy update. The EdgeManagementEnrollmentToken policy has been updated to require configuration from the platform. Any values set from the cloud will be ignored, which includes existing deployments of this policy from the cloud.

  • Performance settings update and feature name changes. The efficiency mode feature name will change to energy saver and efficiency mode for PC gaming name will be renamed PC gaming boost to better describe the feature benefits. The new names will be in browser performance settings after the update.

  • Tenant Restrictions v2 (TRv2). New enforcement to block access from unauthorized Microsoft 365 tenants directly in Microsoft Edge for Business, helping organizations maintain strict compliance and prevent data leakage across tenant boundaries.

  • Copilot icon visibility. Users can now manage the Copilot icon in their toolbar. To hide the icon, right-click the Copilot icon and select 'Hide Copilot'. This will open Settings to toggle the icon's visibility. Admins can control whether the Copilot icon shows in the toolbar using the Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy.

  • Contextual nudges on address bar offering help summarizing webpages. Microsoft Edge for Business now includes an easy way for users to get summaries of their open page from the address bar using Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. This feature seeks to help users more easily understand relevant content and save time.

  • Improved Autofill experience in Microsoft Edge. When users fill in an Address on a form, they will be prompted to choose whether to save it for future Autofill suggestions. This enhancement ensures Autofill data is saved intentionally by users and reduces unwanted entries as part of their Autofill suggestion.

  • Desktop Visual Search. Quickly send images to Bing Visual Search from the Edge Desktop Search Bar to identify images, people, animals, and shows; extract, copy, and translate text while keeping its format. Solve questions quickly in various subjects and get trusted information to boost your knowledge. Discover products, fashion, recipes, identify a location and more. Available on Windows devices. Admins can control availability to this feature using the VisualSearchEnabled policy. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

Announcements

  • Local Network Access. Local Network Access in Microsoft Edge is a security feature that restricts a website’s ability to send requests to servers on your local network. When a website tries to connect, Microsoft Edge shows a prompt asking you to grant or deny permission. This protects privacy and security while maintaining compatibility with modern web standards. The ability of a website to request this permission from users is restricted to secure contexts. This feature is currently enabled by default starting in Microsoft Edge 143. Enterprise administrators can configure Local Network Access policies. More information for users and administrators can be found here: Control a website’s access to the local network in Microsoft Edge.

  • New WebGL software backend. Microsoft Edge, on Windows systems without a physical GPU, will use the Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP) rasterizer for WebGL workloads. Prior versions use SwiftShader, which is no longer a supported component. This scenario is most commonly associated with headless environments and virtual machines. On non-Windows platforms, a physical GPU is required for WebGL moving forward. This change is planned for Microsoft Edge Stable version 144. Administrators can test the new behavior using Microsoft Edge Canary, Dev, or Beta Channels. For more information, see Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP) Guide - Win32 apps.

Feature updates

  • Undo/Redo for PDF Annotations. Users can now undo or redo annotation actions, like highlight or ink, in the new PDF viewer on Windows.

  • Adding protection against malicious sideloaded extensions. Microsoft Edge will detect and revoke malicious sideloaded extensions. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Enhanced Diagnostic Data Collection for Customer Support. Organizations that are unable to use the Send Feedback option in Microsoft Edge can now take advantage of a new export feature. By pressing Alt + Shift + I, users can open the feedback dialog and select Diagnostic Data. This opens a pop-up window where an Export button is available in the upper-right corner, allowing users to download diagnostic information for support purposes.

  • Update to Microsoft Edge mini menu for Mac. The mini menu is triggered on websites and PDFs on text selection and has basic actions like copy and smart actions like definitions. This feature has been removed on Mac devices starting in Microsoft Edge version 143. Also, the QuickSearchShowMiniMenu policy is obsolete starting in Microsoft Edge version 143 for Mac.

  • Tab Search. Tab Search helps users stay organized by letting them quickly find and reopen recently closed tabs or search across all open ones in a single view. From the same menu, they can also enable Vertical Tabs, access the AI-powered Organize Tabs feature, and open Workspaces.

Feature updates

  • Connected Feature Control (CFC). Admins now have centralized, granular control over cloud-powered and AI-driven services in Microsoft Edge such as Translate, Compose, and Auto Tab Grouping through Connected Feature Control (CFC). This new experience allows organizations to align Edge with their compliance and data protection standards by enabling or disabling specific connected experiences from a single location in the Edge Management Service portal.

  • Cross-platform policies in the Edge management service. Admins can now configure policies for Edge for Business across macOS, iOS, and Android devices on top of their existing Windows configurations in the Edge management service. This experience is currently in public preview and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Note

This experience is starting public preview rollout and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  • Protected Clipboard in Microsoft Edge for Business. Admins shouldn’t have to choose between locking down copy/paste and risking data leaks. Protected Clipboard offers a smarter way for keeping sensitive data safe without disrupting user workflows. Using Purview DLP policies to define trusted boundaries across managed cloud apps. Data inside those admin defined boundaries can stay protected while external data can enter if needed. Granular control for admins. Seamless productivity for users.

Note

This experience is starting public preview rollout and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  • Tenant Restrictions v2 (TRv2). New enforcement to block access from unauthorized Microsoft 365 tenants directly in Microsoft Edge for Business, helping organizations maintain strict compliance and prevent data leakage across tenant boundaries.

    Note

This experience is starting public preview rollout and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Feature updates

  • Discover, collect, and protect data shared to Generative AI apps in Microsoft Edge with Microsoft Purview. Microsoft Edge for Business now supports inline enforcement of Purview DLP policies for unmanaged Generative AI applications. When a policy is configured in Purview to monitor or block interactions with unmanaged GenAI apps, Edge automatically applies the required settings to enforce those protections in the browser. This capability helps prevent sensitive data from being shared in prompts to AI services. Learn more on how to get started here.

With this update, automatic activation of Microsoft Purview DLP inline protections for unmanaged GenAI apps in Edge for Business takes only one click. Learn more here. Administrators can create Purview policies to collect and analyze text prompts submitted to unmanaged GenAI apps in Edge to surface sensitive data exposure risks. Administrators can also block prompt submissions for users with elevated insider risk, enforcing adaptive protection directly in the browser.

Announcements

  • Important update regarding the rollout of the Auto-Open feature. We identified an issue with the initial implementation of the Auto-Open feature—it didn’t fully respect user preferences, and some settings weren’t honored as intended.

To address this, the changes are being rolled back in phases during the next month to ensure all user preferences are correctly honored. As a result, users may temporarily notice a return to previous behavior where the sidepane opens even if the sidebar visibility is set to Off.

Here are a few ways to manage the auto-open experience:

    • Manually Turn Off Auto-Open Pane: Users can manually disable the Auto-Open experience by navigating to the settings page if they prefer not to see the sidepane open for Outlook and Teams links.
    • Automatic Engagement-Based Logic: If a user doesn't engage with the Auto-Open experience and quickly closes it three times in a row, the feature is automatically turned off.
    • Turn off Auto-Open Pane using admin policies: Admins can control the Auto-Open experience by using either of these policies.
      1. HubsSidebarEnabled: Set as "False" to turn off
      2. ExtensionSettings: Set the sidebar_auto_open_blocked flag as "True" to turn off

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue in headless mode, which caused features like Print to PDF and Screenshot to not work as expected.
