The authors review the neurophysiology of the electroencephalogram signatures of the anesthetics: propofol, dexmedetomidine, ketamine, sevoflurane, isoflurane, desflurane, and nitrous oxide. These signatures provide a neurophysiologically based paradigm for brain state monitoring of patients receiving anesthesia care.
