La ventilazione polmonare è un evento determinato dalla forza della pompa respiratoria. Questa è composta dai centri respiratori, dalle vie nervose di conduzione e dai muscoli respiratori. Grazie alla misura della pressione d’occlusione alla bocca è possibile studiare sia la forza della muscolatura respiratoria, sia lo stimolo effettivo. Così come per la muscolatura scheletrica, anche i muscoli inspiratori possono andare incontro a fatica per un carico eccessivo.
