I wasn't running it as root.

I've already submitted the bug upstream with a fix. Vysp3r has accepted the change and the next version will include the fix.

This problem won't happen again in the future. https://github.com/Vysp3r/ProtonPlus/pull/1220

@Ryu_Connor: Do not run makepkg as root, see Makepkg: Usage.

I tracked down the problem to su.

The local account I daily drive does not have sudo access - this is by choice.

I use su to shift to the privileged account to do work like use makepkg - otherwise the sudo prompts for -s -r would fail.

This scenario breaks your unit test 4. I'd note that this is a new problem, the older 0.5 build of ProtonPlus didn't suffer issues with a build under su. Nor does any other AUR package I manage break under these conditions.

So my choices are the GSETTINGS_BACKEND=memory option added to your PKGBUILD or using su - username instead of su username to pass unit test 4.

Touching a local user dconf during a PKGBUILD is an interesting choice though.

@Ryu_Connor: That means the issue is on your end, not an upstream or packaging issue.

It is repeatable for me.

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/protonplus.git - makepkg -s -r -c - Failure happens with permission error

Not sure how to provide more targeted details.

@Ryu_Connor: I can neither reproduce building in a clean chroot nor in user space.

Ryu_Connor commented on 2026-08-12 21:43 (UTC) (edited on 2026-08-12 21:44 (UTC) by Ryu_Connor)

The build (0.6.3-1) failed on unit test four. The error blamed a dconf directory permissions issue (unable to create directory '/run/user/1001/dconf').

Adding export GSETTINGS_BACKEND=memory to the top of the check() function inside the PKGBUILD fixed the SIGABRT crash and allows the unit tests to complete and the .zst file to be built.

@mcterra: It builds fine in a clean chroot. Never mix system and local Python packages.

Had to do pip install --break-system-packages --user meson before it would build, even with meson-python installed.
