"Major scholars from America, Ireland, Canada, and Britain have contributed articles about important people, events, and themes that make up the extraordinary saga of the Irish in America." "The Encyclopedia shows how Catholic and Protestant Irish immigrants and their descendants have left their mark on all facets of American life: literature, religion, education, labor, business, science, sports, film, theater, and many more. Culturally, economically, and spiritually, the Irish have played - and continue to play - an essential role in the shaping of America."--Jacket
