The Monarchy and the Constitution (English Edition)

3,9 de 5 estrelas (9)

In the increasingly questioning world of the 1990s, the role of the monarchy in a democracy is again coming under scrutiny. Its critics argue that the monarchy is a profoundly conservative institution which serves to inhibit social change; that it has outlived its usefulness; that it symbolizes and reinforces deference and hierachy; and that its radical reform is therefore long overdue.Rejecting these arguments Vernon Bogdanor makes a powerful case for the positive role that monarchy plays in modern democratic politics. Ranging across law, politics, and history he argues that far from undermining democracy, the monarchy sustains and strengthens democratic institutions; that constitutional monarchy is a form of government that ensures not conservatism but legitimacy. The first serious examination of the political role of the monarchy to appear in many years, this book will make fascinating reading for all those interested in the monarchy and the future of British politics.

Do you ever worry that you might succeed to the British throne and not know how to reign? Of course you do. You're a rational person. Buy Professor Bogdanor's book and banish those fears. This is the authoritative work on the monarchy's place in the contemporary British constitution, covering the rules of succession, the core relevant constitutional provisions, and the sovereign's relationships with the prime minister, Parliament, the Commonwealth, the Church, and more. This is a work of political science -- not of history -- although there is a fair amount of discussion about the constitutional practices of the 20th century monarchy from Edward VII onward, and a good treatment of the abdication crisis of 1936. The book is, admittedly, a quarter-century old at this point, and could use some updating. (There's no discussion of the Succession of the Crown Act of 2013, of course. And think how much could be said about the monarchy's relationship with the Blair government, and with the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales.) Nevertheless, if you're looking for the best scholarly work of political science and constitutional law on the contemporary British monarchy, here is your guide, the Bagehot of this topic.

One caveat: at least one run of the hardback first edition had some major printing issues (pages repeated or omitted). And one more caveat: the Kindle edition is essentially illegible -- do not under any circumstances buy it. Stick to the paperback, dear reader!

An Authoritative Treatment of the Role of the Monarch in the British Government

If you are searching for a definitive work on the role of the British monarch in the British government, then search no further. The author does a terrific job of explaining how the monarchy's role has changed over time, especially since the Revolution of 1688 established parliamentary supremacy. A central tenet of royal power today is that such power can only be exercised on advice of the elected government, thus establishing that government is conducted by those accountable to Parliament. The monarch retains the rights to be consulted, to encourage and to warn (in Walter Baghot's famous formulation). This book also discusses the monarch's role in appointing the prime minister, exercise of prerogative powers, the line of succession, the financing of the monarchy, the monarch's relations with The Church of England and the Commonwealth, the role of the private secretary to the monarch, three constitutional crises that shaped the monarch's role and the future of constitutional monarchy. Very highly recommended to those interested in the British monarchy and its role in British government from historical, legal, governmental and political science perspectives.
